Instead of onion rings, try fried apple rings with your next casual barbecued meal.
Combine flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. Add buttermilk to the beaten egg. Combine wet and dry ingredients to make the batter. Slice cored Jonagold apples into ¼ inch rings. Heat canola oil to 375 degrees. Dip apple rings into batter and cook in the hot oil in small batches turning for even browning. When a golden colour remove the rings from the oil and place on a wire rack covered in paper towel. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve.
For a sweet dessert, add 1 tbsp cinnamon to the batter and dust with icing sugar.
