Packaged Apples

Keep your apples fresh and crisp Store your apples in the crisper section of your fridge. Apples stored near 32°F will last 8 - 10 times longer than apples stored at room temperature. Prevent bruising with gentle handling. Store apples away from foods with strong odours in perforated plastic bag. Avoid storing apples with broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, lettuce, and spinach. Apples emit ethylene gas as they ripen, which aff-ects the storage life of these vegetables. Apples can improve the ripening process of bananas, kiwi, peaches, plums, and pears. Just place unripe fruit in a paper bag with an apple to speed up the ripening process.  

Ambrosia

Ambrosia means "Food of the Gods". Ambrosia is sweet, crisp, juicy and aromatic. Its flavour makes it an excellent apple for slicing. The colour is almost entirely red with a distinctive pink/red blush and faint broad stripes over a creamy white/yellow background.

Cortland

Cortland is a cross between McIntosh and Ben Davis. It has the tart-sweet flavour of Mcintosh and the firm white flesh of Ben Davis. The colour varies from a red stripe over a green to yellowish background to almost completely beet red.

Gala

Gala has Cox Orange Pippin, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious in its family tree. It displays a striking bright red-yellow colour and has a mild, sweet flavour. The flesh is creamy yellow. Its thin skin makes it a favorite for kids.

Golden Delicious

Golden Delicious is a chance seedling, possibly of Grimes Golden. The colour ranges from a greenish yellow to a deep yellow with a red blush. The yellow, crisp and sweet flesh has made this one of the world's most popular eating apples.

Golden Russett

Golden Russett parentage is unknown. It is almost completely covered with a fine yellow russetting. The flesh is fine and has a very distinctive flavour. The Golden Russett was popular before refrigeration, because it could be stored for quite sometime without softening.

Gravenstein

Gravenstein is a very old variety of unknown parentage. The colour varies from a reddish stripe over a yellow background to almost a solid, bright red over a slight green background. The flesh is crisp, juicy and tart which sweetens over time.

Honeycrisp

Honeycrisp is a cross between Macoun and Honeygold. The skin colour is mostly red over a yellow background. The apple is exceptionally crispy and juicy. The flavour ranges from mild and well balanced to strongly aromatic, depending on the maturity.

Idared

Idared is a cross between Wagner and Jonathan. The colour is an orange-red blush over a pale green background. The flesh is a white, very form, dense with a flavour similar to Wagner. It maintains its firmness and quality in storage into the summer.

Jersey Mac

Jersey Mac was developed in 1971 from numerous crosses of different varieties. It ripes in mid to late August and is superior to apples it was bred from. It has a bright red blush over a green background with white, sweet and very juicy flesh.

Jonagold is a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious and is medium-large, round to oval in shape. The colour is predominately a red blush over a bright yellow background. The flesh is dense, crisp and juicy with superb flavour.

McIntosh originated as a wild seedling transplanted by John McIntosh. One of its parents was probably Fameuse or Snow Apple. It ranges in colour from a red stripe over a green background to almost completely dark red. The flesh is white, crisp and tart-sweet.

Paulared was developed in 1967 with unknown parentage but probably with Cortland as one parent. It has bright red blush over a green background. The flesh is white, tart and very crisp. Paulared are at their best in early season.

Red Delicious

Red Delicious comes from a chance seedling of unknown parentage. They are known for their distinctive lobes or "bumps" on the bottom and are almost 100% red. The flesh is greenish-cream, dense, crisp and juicy. Red Delicious is a favourite for eating fresh.
